"Amy," I said a few months ago, "there's a 'National Novel Writing Month' in November. There should be a 'National Novel Editing Month' too."
"Jen," she said, "there's one in March. Go to www.nanoedmo.net."
Amy and I would like to help get you - and ourselves - into editing mode. If you've completed the rough draft of a novel - in any genre - please join us for National Novel Editing Month (nanoedmo.net). NaNoEdMo requires that you revise and edit your novel for 50 hours during March.
At each session, Amy and I will give you strategy, tips, and - most importantly - time to revise your rough draft into a manuscript you are proud of. Library sponsored NaNoEdMo sessions for adults and teens meet Wednesdays, March 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 6-7:30 p.m. To register, or for more information, please call the Reference Desk at 849-6161.
Unsure of what needs fixing? Check out writing books by the experts, like "The Art of War for Writers" by James Scott Bell; "On Writing" by Stephen King; "Fiction Writer's Workshop" by Josip Novakovich; "Plot & Structure" by James Scott Bell; and "The Weekend Novelist Re-Writes the Novel" by Robert J. Ray.
What else have you been putting off? Have friends told you to read "The Help" (by Kathryn Stockett)? Procrastinate no more. Call the Reference Desk and reserve your copy today.
Then, on Wednesday, March 7 at 2 p.m., join Reference Librarian Rick Pelletier at his showing of "The Help" starring Emma Stone, Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer (Rated PG-13; 146 minutes). After the movie, Rick will lead a discussion about both the book and the movie.
What have you put off doing with your kids? Have you taught them the differences between the Internet and library databases? No worries. On Monday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. kids can join Mr. Zack for a lesson on smart Internet research.
Finally - talk about procrastinating - the Gregorian Calendar only lands on Feb. 29 every four years.
To celebrate, the library will host a Leap Year Party for 'tweens (kids ages 10-13) on Wednesday, Feb. 29 at 4 p.m. Tweens will craft tokens of weirdness and watch Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" (Rated PG; 108 minutes).
(Jen McQueen is a Reference Librarian at the Mount Pleasant Regional Library. She can often be found procrastinating while working very hard.)
