Harris Teeter announced the opening of its newest Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) store in Rivertowne Place located in Mount Pleasant.
The store opened on Wednesday, June 23.
Similar to other Harris Teeter locations, the new store has recycling centers in the lobby but was built with additional energy and environmental design components in mind that allowed it to apply for LEED certification.
Over 20 percent of all building materials were manufactured regionally (within 500 miles of the store), 95percent of all construction waste was recycled, and 50 percent of all wood used during construction came from certified sustainable forests.

Harris Teeter also gives its shoppers a variety of ways to go green. Shoppers are encouraged to purchase reusable Harris Teeter shopping bags. If they choose to use paper and plastic grocery bags, Harris Teeter offers shoppers convenient recycling centers in all store lobbies where they can deposit them for recycling.
To save green, Harris Teeter encourages its shoppers to visit harristeeter.com and sign up for a Very Important Customer (VIC) card. The VIC card allows shoppers to take advantage of weekly specials, participate in VIC promotions, sweepstakes and, best of all, it is FREE! Shoppers can also sign up for e-VIC and have weekly specials e-mailed to them every Wednesday, notifying them when items they regularly buy are on sale. Plus they will receive member only discounts!
To celebrate the grand opening, the company will also host a variety of events on the first three weekends following the opening. During select times on Friday, June 25 - Sunday, June 27, the e-VIC mobile will be parked in front of the store giving customers an opportunity to sign-up for the service. The following weekend the ice cream truck will be at the store and associates will distribute FREE Harris Teeter brand ice cream sandwiches to customers. The final grand opening weekend the Rancher Mobile Grill will visit the store during select times and associates will give away free samples of Rancher NY Strip Steak.
