Alec Robinovitz, 10, of Mount Pleasant was named South Carolina's top two youth volunteers for 2010 by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism.
The awards program, now in its 15th year, is conducted by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
Robinovitz was nominated by East Cooper Montessori Charter School in Mount Pleasant. As State Honorees, he will receive $1000, an engraved silver medallion, and an all-expense-paid trip in early May to Washington, D.C., where he will join the top two honorees from each of the other states and the District of Columbia for several days of national recognition events. Ten of them will be named America's top youth volunteers for 2010 at that time.
Robinovitz a fifth-grader at East Cooper Montessori Charter School, has collected more than 3,000 new and gently used books over the past two years for children being treated at the Medical University of South Carolina Children's Hospital.
"I thought of this project after waiting at the emergency room with my sister," he said "I noticed there were no books to read. Whenever I am frightened, reading books always helps me feel better."
He later learned that many children at the hospital had few books at home, so he decided he would collect books, not only to comfort them during their hospital stays, but also to provide them with a book of their own to take home with them.
The first year, Robinovitz e-mailed friends and family members to ask for books, and set up collection boxes at his school, in his neighborhood, and at a school where his grandmother teaches.
Nine hundred books arrived.
The following year, Robinovitz more than doubled his results by publicizing his campaign in local newspapers and seeking donations from more than 50 publishers.
He said that each year he will look for ways to increase the number of books he collects, and so now he has recruited his first-grade sister to help.
"I guess I learned that one person who tries hard can succeed in making a difference, even when that one person is a kid," Robinovitz said.
Maria Patricia Guerry graduated Summa Cum Laude on Dec. 19, 2009 from Charleston Southern University. She has a degree in management of business arts.
Trident Academy's Mary Silgals and Lalla Boatwright have received the highest teaching designation in the state - both have become South Carolina Independent Schools Association (SCISA) Master Teachers.
SCISA Master Teachers willingly invest time and energy, motivate students toward goals, offer personal attention and demonstrate by being a role model.
Silgals, MLIS, M. Ed in Technology, is the media specialist and instructional technologist at Trident Academy. She received her bachelor's degree in education from the University of Kentucky, her MLIS from the University of South Carolina, her M.Ed. in Technology from Lesley University and is currently an executive board member of the South Carolina Association of School Librarians. She has taught at Trident Academy for the past nine years.
"Knowing the caliber of teachers at Trident Academy who have earned this designation, I am deeply honored to be considered their colleague," she said.
Boatwright, MLIS, has taught at Trident Academy for 23 years and in addition to her teaching responsibilities, she is also the High School coordinator. She earned her bachelor's degree in English and history from Furman University and has taught both high and middle school students in both areas.
"I have truly enjoyed working with the teachers and students that have entered my life. I can still see individual faces of students that I shared moments with when something finally made sense to them. If it had only been one, that would have been enough, but I have been lucky and those moments keep you going. Knowing that you have made a difference is worth the times when you struggle to get a student to try just one more time after that last failure," she said.
Trident Academy is the only school in SCISA to have someone earn the Master Teacher designation every year since the program's inception in 2005.
Current Trident Academy teachers who have received the designation are Mary Alice Satterfield and Therese Kristiansen.
