Last week I shared with you the very sad tale of the fire which gutted the shrimping vessel Miss Karen. It's been determined that the cause was some sort of electrical problem in the forward part of the engine room and the boat has been declared an almost total loss. The main engine, generator and topside rigging will be salvaged but the hull will be scrapped.
True-to-form, the close-knit fishing fraternity of Shem Creek has rallied to help out. I received a phone call from captain Bubba Rector who lost his boat Anna Grace this past fall when she sank out by the jetties. Bubba informed me that, as was done for he and his family, a fund-raiser will be held soon to benefit captain Donnie Brown and his family.
