National Day on Writing celebrated locally

“What do I love about the Lowcountry?”
Students across the Lowcountry are answering that question for the upcoming celebration of the National Day on Writing on Oct. 20.
Local students and teachers will join professional writers for a public reading at the Riviera Theater at Charleston Place from 4:30-5:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 19. The Lowcountry Writing Project hopes this event will kick off similar readings in schools across the Lowcountry on the official Oct. 20 celebration date.
The celebration started with students and teachers “Celebrating the Lowcountry through Writing” in August and September. They were then able to submit their work to the National Gallery of Writing, a Web site that will publish student and community writing from all over the country. The Lowcountry Writing Project’s section of the national gallery will be unveiled at the Oct.19 event.
Charleston Mayor Joe Riley will open the public reading, with local poet Jim Lundy serving as emcee. The program will include readings and some audio-visual presentations by Lowcountry students and teachers, plus readings by local author Ken Burger and South Carolina Poet Laureate Marjory Wentworth.
This event is free and open to the public.
