Mellow Mushroom has opened up in Mount Pleasant at 3110 Hwy 17 North. To celebrate, owner Walt Harris is throwing The Grand Opening Backyard Bash. Saturday, May 2nd from 11am to 10pm. Live music, great pizza, fun for the kids and adults alike.
Check next week’s listings for bands and times.
So right now, I’m listening to Dori Chitayat at www.spanishflamencoguitar.com.
This type of music is timeless as it is passionate and moving.
I encourage you to check out this great guitarist. He is at Neil Jordan’s Steakhouse every Wednesday.
Speaking of guitarist, Richard Lloyd will be at A Dough Re Mi this Saturday night. Lloyd was in one of the founding bands of the New York Punk scene, Television.
He, along with Tom Verlaine, Richard Hell and Billy Ficca not only recorded one of the greatest guitar albums of all time (1977’s Marquee Moon) but in looking for a place to play in the beginning, they stumbled across this little place called CBGBs where they convinced proprietor Hilly Kristal to let them play. The rest is history.
After Television disbanded in 1978, Lloyd worked with the likes of Matthew Sweet and John Doe.
He produced, engineered and played guitar for Rocket From The Tombs.
To date he has released 5 solo albums the latest being 2007’s The Radiant Monkey. You can also take lessons from him at his Web site richardlloyd.com, through his column in Guitar World called “The Alchemist Guitarist” or on Comcast On Demand.
His backing band, The Sufi Monkeys, consists of Billy Ficca on drums and Keith Hartel on bass.
Also on the bill is Allnightkungfu and Michael Trent.
Friday night at the Windjammer it’s Cravin’ Melon. From the upstate, they have quite the local following. Opening the show is former Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelie frontman, Mike Farris. Unique vocals and a style that is where gospel, blues and rock meet. This is a must-see show.
I am diligently working on the live music listings. Hopefully each week, I’ll be able to include more listings from locations on this side of the Cooper River.
I’ve noticed that other publications have places listed that I don’t have yet.
Someone said to me, “why don’t you just copy them from The Charleston City Paper?”
Well, there are many reasons to not do that. I know from experience that it requires work to get the listings and keep them updated from week to week.
I’d never steal someone else’s hard work.
So if you have a place where you offer live music and would like me to list it, please send me your info.
My deadline is Mondays at noon so try to get it to me before Saturday.
Until next week, support live music and be nice to each other.
