Myrtle Gibbs Burkhardt Von Dohlen, 89, of Isle of Palms died April 6, 2009, in the Ladson home of her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Ron McCarthy.
Born to the late Joe Lee Gibbs and Emma Lee Benton Gibbs on November 11, 1919 in Alamo, Georgia, Mrs. Von Dohlen was the second of seven children, including Juanita Gibbs Ivey of Richland, GA, Elease Gibbs Lindsey of Gainesville, FL, Joe Lee Gibbs, Jr. (d), Jack Gibbs of Covington, GA, Carol Marguerite Gibbs Heath (d), and Gene Gibbs of La Cross, FL. She had two children from her marriage to William Patrick Burkhardt (d. 1962), William Patrick Burkhardt Jr. (d. 2003) and Barbara Burkhardt Duke McCarthy.
Mrs. Von Dohlen was Chief of the Shore Branch, Navy Finance Office, and was selected “1973 Woman of the Year” by the Charleston Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association. On April 11, 1970, she married Joseph Wilkins Von Dohlen (d. 1999), a Navy veteran who retired in 1974 as a Chief Electrician Mate and served in WWII and Korea.
Mrs. Von Dohlen retired in 1975 and was a member of Milcah Temple 77, Praying Hands Unit, Shriner’s Widows Club, Order of Easter Star Alhambra Chapter 60, Daughters of the Nile, Mine Ron Ten Association, BPOE Does Drove 231, IOP Keen Agers, and Charleston Rifle Club Auxiliary.
Mrs. Von Dohlen is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Ron McCarthy of Ladson, SC, her step-son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Marie Von Dohlen, grandchildren Lisa Duke Cornell and her husband David of Gainesville, FL, Lynne Duke Shenesey of Summerville, SC, David Wayne Duke and wife Peggy of Moncks Corner, SC, William Patrick Burkhardt III of Long Beach, CA, Stephen Lee Burkhardt and his wife Estela of Pace, FL, Daniel Burkhardt of Oak Ridge, TN, Joseph Wilkins Von Dohlen II and his wife, Felicia, and Jamie Von Dohlen, all of Mt. Pleasant, SC.
Her great-grandsons are Matthew Shenesey III and Andrew Shenesey, both of Summerville, Nathan Reiner of Gainesville, and Marlon Duke of Moncks Corner. She has two granddaughters, Leanna Burkhardt of Pace, FL, and Schuyler Von Dohlen of Mt. Pleasant.
Relatives and friends of Mrs. Von Dohlen attended services on Thursday, April 9 at J. HENRY STUHR, MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL. A burial followed in Mt. Pleasant Memorial Garden.
