A handful of Russian students were enticed to the states, specifically Mount Pleasant, with the promise of work and a safe, clean place to live for the summer. But once they got here, that's not what they experienced. One Russian girl was so upset that she called police.
She said she was here on a student visa and went through a man who got her a job and gave her an apartment to live in. However, he crammed 13 other students in this three bedroom apartment. He gave them all a mattress to sleep on and a coffee table. Then he charged them each $300 a month and the rent to the apartment complex is only $1100 a month.
The property management company got word about the situation and attempted to force all 13 out. Turns out the lease was up in June anyway. But before they actually got kicked out the organizer of this labor ring made them all - all 13 of them - sleep in one room while he entertained his girlfriend who came in from out of town.
The police officer walked through the apartment which was filthy and covered in dirty dishes and spoiled food.
She was told how to take the situation up in civil court and told to get a hotel room until they could find another place to live.
