William O. Benton, 69, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, went into eternal rest on October 9, 2009. He was the son of the late William Oliver Benton, Jr. and the late Dorothea Benton McDaniel.

Billy joined the United States Coast Guard in 1957 and he retired as a Chief Quartermaster in 1980. He then graduated from Palmer College with an Associates Degree.  He was a parishioner at Stella Maris Catholic Church where he was an alter server and an usher, past Exalted Ruler at the Elks Lodge, a Mason and a Shriner.  

He is survived by his wife; Patricia Joyce Benton, three daughters; Tara B. Powell and husband Jon Powell, Robin B. France and Stephanie B. Tidwell and husband Bryan K. Tidwell, six grandchildren; Kathleen and Jon William Powell, Madison Proulx and Mackenzie France, Bryan, Trucker and Emma Tidwell, two brothers; twin Brother Theodore Benton and wife Joanne Benton of Winchester, MA, Michael and Jennifer Benton , of Irving TX, two sisters; Lynn and J. Scott Bagnal, of Edisto Beach, SC  and Dorothea  B. Frank and husband Peter, of Montclair, NJ, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation was Sunday, October 11, 2009 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, 1520 Rifle Range Rd., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464, and the funeral was Monday, October 12, 2009 at noon at Stella Maris Catholic Church, Sullivan’s Island, SC. Burial followed at Mt Pleasant Memorial Gardens, Mt Pleasant, SC.
