Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital volunteer Art Cobert turned 92 on Jan. 10.

He also came into work that day.

“It's not every day you see a person reach a milestone of fourscore and 12 years old,” said Chaplain Fr. David Adams, a hospital chaplain. “And even fewer who still work three days a week and walk a mile on the beach every morning with their coffee-drinking buddies.”

As part of Cobert's birthday celebration, Adams organized a card campaign that netted nearly 100 hand-written birthday wishes.

Cobert has served more than 750 hours as an RSFH volunteer, but he has done much more than that for his country. He was a flight engineer, gunner and backup pilot in World War II. And as a member of the 11th Bomb Squadron flew missions in the Pacific theater.

Cobert was twice wounded during his service and is a Purple Heart recipient. And while he wasn't awarded a medal on his birthday this year, Cobert did score a pretty delicious cake.
