On Saturday, March 23, in Columbia, 141 students in kindergarten through 12th grade from all over the state competed in the South Carolina Scholastic Chess Championships. The Pinckney Elementary Chess Team finished with their best performance ever at a state chess competition. Pinckney’s kindergarten through third grade team finished as state runner-up in their division, while the fourth and fifth grade team won the state championship for the K-5 division.
Cario Middle School also sent a team to the competition for the first time in school history, and the team finished a respective fourth in the state with only three members. Both teams are coached by local chess expert, Stephen Welt, and coordinated by Laurel Hill teacher, E.C. Setser.
