Swamp Foxes avenge loss to Bobcats

File Junior defender Joe Ridenour has helped the Swamp Foxes stay in contention for a playoff berth this season. --

The Ashley Ridge boys’ soccer team claimed a 2-1 victory over region foe Bluffton Tuesday in a game that was decided in overtime.
Freshman midfielder Britt Soyebo scored a goal in the 58th minute to give the Swamp Foxes a 1-0 lead that was nearly enough to secure the victory. However, Bluffton slipped a goal past Ashley Ridge in the final three minutes of regulation to force overtime.
Neither team found the net in the first overtime period but sophomore Jake Kreider hit a shot halfway through the second OT and the Swamp Foxes fended off the Bobcats for the final three plus minutes to secure the victory.
“I am very pleased with the team because we lost to Bluffton 4-2 earlier this year,” Ashley Ridge coach Nate Harris said. “This result shows that we are growing and improving as a team. We also showed tremendous resolve. Giving up the equalizer with three minutes left could crush a young team, but my team came out fighting in overtime and pulled out the win.”
The Swamp Foxes improved their record to 7-6-1 with the win and moved to 2-3 in region competition. Bluffton fell to 6-6 and 2-3 so the teams are now tied for fourth place in the region, which only has four playoff seeds up for grabs.
Both teams have five region games remaining so Harris is hoping the Swamp Foxes will get better results in the second round of region play.
“We must continue to execute game plans as well as finish our chances to score when we get them,” Harris said.
Ashley Ridge hosts a rematch with Fort Dorchester (8-4, 5-1) at 7 p.m. Friday.
The Ashley Ridge girls (8-3, 5-0) remain in first place for their region after earning a 1-0 road victory over Bluffton Tuesday. The Lady Swamp Foxes travel to Fort Dorchester (5-5, 3-2) Friday.
