The community has until Monday, May 6 at 3 p.m. to vote for Kathy Green, a fifth-grade teacher at Summerville Elementary School who was a guest on LIVE with Kelly and Michael this week, for “Top Teacher.”
“LIVE” has extended the voting for “Top Teacher” to May 6, and the 2013 Top Teacher will be announced on Tuesday, May 7, on “LIVE.”
Following a moving piece about the remarkable work that Green does for her students, she walked out to a standing ovation from the “LIVE” audience. Then, hosts Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan presented Green with an trophy for everything she does.
Green also received 30 Intel Inspired Toshiba Ultrabook Convertibles for her classroom, and a $5,000 shopping spree at Talbots.
On Friday, May 3, after each finalist has appeared on “LIVE,” it will be time for the viewers to vote.   The teacher with the most votes will be the 2013 overall Top Teacher, and that person will be announced on Tuesday, May 7.
The winner will take home a brand-new 2014 ford Escape, and the winner’s school will receive $25,000.
“Mrs. Green exemplifies what a teacher is and should be for her children,” said Lori Dibble, principal, Summerville Elementary. “She genuinely believes all children were born for greatness and works hard to foster those unique gifts and talents.  I encourage everyone to get out there and vote Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday for Kathy Green so the Low Country can claim ownership to the Nations greatest teacher!”
Please visit the school’s website for Mrs. Green's footage from Live with Kelly and Michael, as well as the link to voting: http://dorchester.ses.schoolfusion.us.
The finalists were chosen based on online voting.
The other four finalists are Erin Palonen from Griswold, Conn, Ann Marie Rooney from New Rochelle, NY, Suzette Steward from Katy, Texas and Rick Zano from Virginia Beach, Va.
Green was in the middle of a lesson when the semifinalist announcement was made. School officials taped the portion of the show during which the semifinalists were named and surprised the teacher shortly after by playing the recording for her class.
For the contest show producers asked viewers to nominate teachers for being outstanding mentors to their students in and out of the classroom, for making their schools better, and for going above and beyond to serve their communities.
Green was nominated by Kristin Schulz. Her daughter, Lydia, was in Green’s fourth-grade class last year and is in her fifth-grade class this year.
