Dan Brown/Independent John Smith and Earnest Weatherford won the 20th Annual Moncks Corner Medical Center Family Open Catfish Tournament with a weight of 88.97 pounds.

Saturday was a beautiful day for fishing, and anglers from across Berkeley County made the most of it.
John Smith and Earnest Weatherford hauled in 88.97 pounds of catfish, enough to take top prize in the 20th Annual Moncks Corner Medical Center Family Open Catfish Tournament on May 11 at the William Dennis boat landing on the Tail Race Canal.
“They broke the scales,” said Dan Moon, tournament co-founder and master of ceremonies at the weigh-in.
Tournament organizer Bill Salisbury, Berkeley County Coroner and Rescue Squad Chief, honored Moon’s long service and commitment to the tournament, whose funds benefit the Berkeley County Rescue Squad. “We wouldn’t be here without you,” Salisbury said, and presented Moon with a mug engraved with Berkeley County Rescue Squad and a catfish.
“Hard to believe it’s been twenty years,” said Moon. “I remember sitting over at the old Dock Restaurant and watching fishermen pulling whopper-sized catfish out of the Tail Race Canal, and we thought, why not make this a tournament?”
The tournament enjoyed a boost this year, fielding a total of 56 teams, 20 more than in 2012.
“We have already exceeded what we made last year and that’s not even counting the door prize drawing tickets,” Salisbury said.
Sponsored by Moncks Corner Medical Center, Kickin’ 92.5 FM, Rhoad and Rhoad Law Firm and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 19, the tournament benefits the Berkeley County Rescue Squad.
The team of Doug Wilkerson and Bobby Tumbleston finished second with a total weight of 81.16 pounds, and also took top prize in largest catfish, reeling in a 25.66 pounder.
The team of James Cook, Dennis Poltz, Tanya Black, Hailey Black and Tammy Newman came in third with a weight of 64.04 pounds of catfish.
“We had a great time out there,” said Tanya Black. “This was our first time fishing for catfish.”
