“Duel of the Heart, the story of Theodosia Burr Alston” by Rose Moore Tomlin, will be released June 1 by Evening Post Books.
In this historical fiction novel, Tomlin explores the controversy Theodosia experienced throughout her life. Torn by her love for her father and her husband, two powerful political figures during the infancy of the United States, Theodosia is forced to make life-altering decisions. An agonizing stretch of her loyalties plays out against a backdrop of intriguing early-1800 events.
Tomlin says, “In telling her story, I have held hard to historical facts, though I confess to flights of imagination in the yawning gaps where research material is non-existent. Theodosia’s scrupulously-kept journal has never been found, so I composed her entries, relying on a number of actual resources and taking some license in improvising what she might have penned.”
Tomlin’s tale repeatedly juxtaposes the hopes of a woman determined to make her mark and the reality of immutable circumstances. The story moves like quicksilver to an unbelievably heart-rending conclusion.
“A beautifully written tale of a remarkable woman’s struggle for identity. Tomlin deftly captures the times as well as the mystery of Theodosia’s conflicted life. This is the best kind of historical fiction — one that combines biography with art.” — Linda Lear, prize-winning author of “Beatrix Potter: A Life in Nature” and “Rachel Carson: Witness for Nature.”
“ ... intimate insight into the life of a woman driven by her father to fulfill a destiny heretofore unimaginable: intellectual equality with a man ... .” — Richard N. Côté, author of “Strength and Honor: The Life of Dolley Madison” and “Theodosia Burr Alston: Portrait of a Prodigy.”
