Q. What can Mount Pleasant do to have the owner of the abandoned buildings located behind Oakland Mall secured and maintained. Note in the photos the soffit has fallen from the east entryway, the landscaping has not been maintained and the smaller building has an open window. Was this construction a part of the original development plans for Oakland and if so, what type of construction was this structure to be? - Sandra Bungerz, Mount Pleasant

A. “The building in the photos is the Gen-Phar Building, or at least it was intended to be. The ownership of the building is in question at this time, due to pending legal cases in federal court. A building inspector was dispatched upon receipt of your question to the site to re-install caution barrier tape around the east entry way. The main building is locked. As always it is a good idea to stay away from vacant properties and report any vandalism or vagrancy to the police department.” - T. Lee Cave, CBO, MCP, Building Official, Town of Mount Pleasant

Q. What are the crane barges working on in the marsh/creek just northeast of the IOP Connector by the top of the bridge? - Terry Bergdorf

A. “SCE&G is working on a new electric transmission line that will allow SCE&G to provide greater reliability and meet the growing electrical needs of the East Cooper area. SCE&G began construction in October 2012, and work has recently moved to several barges in the Hamlin Sound. With an estimated one-year construction schedule, work is scheduled for completion by the end of 2013.” - Matt Hammond, Manager, Mount Pleasant Electric Operations, SCE&G
