Summerville Green opened the South Carolina American Legion Baseball League 1 Juniors Tournament Monday with a 12-5 win over Moncks Corner.
The winner of the four-team, double elimination tournament being held at Cane Bay High School this week will advance to participate in the state tournament. Summerville Gold and Goose Creek are also vying for that honor. Games will be held nightly until a league champion is crowned.
Wilson Beattie got the start on the hill for Summerville and threw three innings to pick up the win. Summerville’s Cameron Almond also pitched three innings and both Bryce Speciale and Gabriel Crowder pitched in the seventh.
Summerville took the lead in the third inning. Steven Dibble doubled and Almond doubled to drive him in. Then Trevious Tucker plated Almond with a single.
Summerville added three runs in the fourth off an Almond single that plated Charlie Fessler and a double by Beattie that drove in Alex Hursey and Dibble.
In the sixth, Summerville took a 9-1 lead off hits by Tucker, Andrew Kenny and Hundley McCurry that drove in Dibble, Beattie and Tucker.
Summerville then added three runs in the top of the seventh. Hursey opened the inning by receiving a base on balls and scored on a single by Dibble. The Moncks Corner center fielder misplayed the ball and Dibble went all the way around the horn to score. Summerville’s final run came when Kenny singled to plate Almond.
Moncks Corner scored four runs off four walks, three wild pitches and an error in the bottom of the frame, but Summerville secured the win by making a routine play on a grounder.
