The Patriots (2-2) moved the ball, but the Gators (4-0) made too many big plays and capitalized on two Fort turnovers.
Goose Creek Fullback Evan McField scored on runs of 49 and 7 yards. Gator QB Dantez Bennamon scored on scampers covering 57 and 64 yards. He also completed 7 of 9 pass attempts for approximately 75 yards.
“We don't have a dominant defense, but some guys stepped up tonight and did a good job,” Goose Creek coach Chuck Reedy said. “Offensively, we went into the game with the idea of running a lot of option and all those big plays basically came off the option. It was a good win. Fort Dorchester is a good football team so we are glad to get this one behind us.”
Matt Murray was the workhorse for Fort Dorchester. He led all rushers with 164 yards and scored two TDs. Patriot QB Kobe Garrett rushed for 100 yards and two TDs and passed for approximately 90 yards.
Fort Dorchester only trailed by a score (28-21) entering the final quarter.
“We made some mistakes,” Fort Dorchester coach Steve LaPrad said. “Obviously we didn't play good enough defense to win but we hung in there. We are not a bad ball club, but we have to stop making some of those stupid mistakes. … It was kind of like the Stratford game, I thought we were right there in it.”
The Patriots drove 63 yards to score on a Murray run on their opening drive to take the lead. They then held the Gators to a sole yard on their opening drive.
But Goose Creek scored on its next four possessions. Bennamon scored on runs of 57 and 64 yards while McField and tailback Caleb Kinlaw scored on runs of 49 and 46, respectively, to give the Gators a 28-7 lead.
The Patriots didn't quit.
With 3:53 remaining in the first half, Fort Dorchester drove 69 yards to score. Garrett capped the drive by rushing for 2 yards and then diving another yard to stretch the tip of the ball across the goal line for a TD with no time remaining.
Goose Creek's first possession of the second half was stopped by a fourth-down-and-5 Patriot stand.
Fort Dorchester then drove 68 yards to score and cut the lead to 7. Garrett had the big play on the drive, breaking a pair of tackles on his way to a 9-yard TD run halfway through the third quarter.
But the fourth quarter belonged to the Gators. Goose Creek sustained two long drives and took a 42-21 lead off TD runs by McField and Darin McNeil.
Fort Dorchester responded by driving 71 yards and scoring on a 25-yard run by Murray. But Goose Creek needed only one play to cap the scoring with a 57-yard TD run by Tyrik Johnson on first down.
