First National Chess Trophy for CCSD

Over 1300 students competed in Florida this past weekend at the National K-12 Scholastic Chess Championships. Brady Setser, a second grader from Laurel Hill Primary, finished with three wins and 86th place overall. Jacob and Joshua Lewis, 3rd graders from Charles Pickney Elementary had a good showing at their first national tournament and finished 131st and 141st in the nation.


Austin Setser, a 6th grader from Cario Middle School, had three wins and brought home Charleston County School District’s first ever national scholastic chess trophy with a first place in the under 600 rating category. All of these students are products of a chess team at Charles Pinckney Elementary and Laurel Hill Primary School. They are coached by Stephen Welt, a local chess coach and expert player.
