CofC Opera to present ‘The Marriage of Fiagaro’

  • Wednesday, January 16, 2013

The College of Charleston Opera program in the College’s School of the Arts will present the sublime masterpiece “Le Nozze di Figaro” (“The Marriage of Figaro”). This comic opera by W.A. Mozart, will take audiences on a laugh-out-loud ride filled with schemes, masquerades and mistaken identities.

Over the final five years of his life, Mozart composed four operas that are among the most important and popular in the standard repertoire. This remarkably productive period of success for Mozart began with “Le Nozze di Figaro,” which received its world premiere in Vienna, Austria, on May 1, 1786.

The infamous Figaro, his bride-to-be Susanna and the Countess conspire to expose and embarrass the cunning, skirt-chasing Count. Jordan Boyd stars as the subversive Figaro, and Ashley Fabian (Saturday) and Courtney Richmond (Monday) play his clever bride, Susanna. Abbie Geddings portrays the randy pageboy, Cherubino. Kori Miller (Saturday) and Cherise Sickles (Monday) play the longsuffering Countess, and Nathan Matticks plays her husband, the Count, who must be taught a lesson.

David Templeton, assistant professor and director of the College of Charleston Opera program proudly shares, “This is a very demanding piece, and we have the brightest talent in our vocal/opera program this year to handle such a high caliber opera. In addition, local professional musicians will join the College of Charleston Orchestra, coached by Yuriy Bekker and conducted by Robert Taylor. The department of theatre and dance also adds its talent by constructing traditional costuming for the production.”

Performances will take place on Saturday, Jan. 26 and Monday, Jan. 28 at 8 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Simons Center for the Arts, 54 Saint Philip St. Tickets may be purchased online at music.cofc.edu at or at the door. They are $20 for adults, $10 for College of Charleston students with a valid ID.
