Newcomers luncheon

What: The women of the East Cooper Newcomers Club monthly lunch

When: Wednesday, Jan. 16, 10 a.m.

Details: The women of the East Cooper Newcomers Club invite members, guests, new residents and recent retirees to attend their monthly luncheon meeting. Bible study

String Extravaganza concert

What: The Music Matters! Concert Series will present its free concert “StringExtravaganza”

When: Thursday, Jan. 17, 7 p.m.

Where: Franke at Seaside, Rodenberg Chapel, 1885 Rifle Range Road, Mount Pleasant

Details: This free concert is open to the public, and will highlight the violin playing of local music prodigy, Nicholas Bentz. He will play selections from Bach’s Partita #2, Paganini’s 24 Caprices, and Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto #1. This recital is part of the music advocacy project run by Abigail Kent to raise community awareness to support live music and the local programs that make this possible.

Garden club

What: The Isle of Palms Garden Club meeting

When: Thursday, Jan. 17, 6:30 p.m.

Where: IOP Exchange Club, 2011 Palm Blvd.

Details: The speaker is Michelle Wrenn of the Seewee Visitors Environmental Center. She will speak on “Invasive Plants.” Social time is at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting is at 7 p.m. Call Janice Ashley at 843-883-9016 for more information.

Spaghetti dinner

What: VFW Post 10624 and Ladies Auxiliary Spaghetti dinner

When: Friday, Jan. 18, 6-8 p.m.

Where: VFW Post 10624, 1411 Stuart Engal’s Blvd.

Details: Dinner includes spaghetti with salad, desert and bread. The cost is $10 per person. For more information, call 843-884-0062.

Myasthenia Gravis Support Group

WHAT: “Effects of Myasthenia Gravis on Swallowing, Speech and Voice” presented by Ashli O’Rourke, M.D., M.Sc, Otolaryngologist and Kendrea L. Focht, C.Sc.D. Speech-Language Pathologist at the Evelyn Trammell Institute for Voice and Swallowing, Medical University of South Carolina.

WHEN: Saturday, Jan. 19, 10:30 a.m. until noon.

WHERE: East Cooper Medical Center, 2000 Hospital Drive, Mount Pleasant

Details: This is a free support group. It is open to Myasthenia Gravis (MG) patients, their families and caregivers as well as other interested parties. Meetings are held on the third Saturday of each month. For more information go to www.mgsupport11@comcast.net or call 843-388-1683.

Oyster roast

What: Knights of Columbus annual Oyster Roast

When: Saturday, Jan. 19, 6:30 p.m.

Where: Gold Bug Island (foot of the Ben Sawyer Bridge)

Details: Ticket price includes oysters, fish stew, hot dogs, beer and wine. (No coolers please.) Tickets for 12 years and older is $25. Children’s tickets are $8. For tickets call Tom Franzone at 843-884-5670.

MLK, Jr. tribute

What: “This Little Light of Mine, I’m Gonna Let It Shine,” Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute Performance with the CSO Gospel Choir/CSO Spiritual Ensemble

When: Saturday, Jan. 19, 7 p.m.

Where: Royal Missionary Baptist Church, 4761 Luella Ave., North Charleston.

Details: This performance is free and open to the public. An entry ticket is required; freewill donations accepted.

Shepherd’s Center

What: The Shepherd’s Center of East Cooper weekly meeting

When: Tuesday, Jan. 22, 10 a.m.

Where: The Fellowship Hall of Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church

Details: The public is invited to attend. The first program at 10 a.m. will be talk by Gabrielle Schultz on “MUSC Senior Mentor Program: The second program at 11 a.m. will be a talk by Grahame Long, author, on “Dueling in Charleston.”

East Cooper Republicans

What: East Cooper Republican Club 2013 kickoff lunch

When: Monday, Jan. 21, 11:30 a.m.

Where: Mount Pleasant Holiday Inn

Details: The guest speaker will be South Carolina Speaker of the House Bobby Harrell. Speaker Harrell will discuss the upcoming S.C. House GOP agenda and will take questions from the audience. Meeting concludes at 1 p.m. membership dues are $15. Member price for lunch is $15. Non-member price for lunch is $20.

IOP oysters

WHAT: Isle of Palms Exchange Club Oyster Roast

WHEN: Saturday, Jan. 26, 4:30-7:30 PM

WHERE: Isle of Palms Exchange Club House, 201 Palm Blvd.

DETAILS: There will be oysters, chili, hot dogs, DJ and more, plus a silent auction and plenty of door prizes donated by local businesses. Tickets are $20 advance, $25 at the door. Children under 12 are half price. Proceeds support student scholarship program. For tickets, contact 886-8489 or www.iopexchange.org.
