Local eCourse for women addresses gender pay gap
Census data from 2012 indicate women’s earnings as a percentage of men’s declined from 77.4 percent in 2010 to 77.0 in 2011. Laura Camacho, PhD and founder of Mixonian Institute (est. 2009), created an innovative training course to change that, for a few women at a time. “Obviously traditional methods of teaching and corporate training haven’t begun to close the gender pay gap. I think it’s because these program are based on traditional male patterns of communication,” says Dr. Camacho. One of the main reasons she began this communication training firm was to break out of the traditional teaching models.
Her contribution to eradicate the pay discrepancy is a new leadership e-course for women called “The Intrepid Executive World Tour.” Not only is this training virtual, through emailed lessons and conference calls, it’s taking a completely lateral approach to teaching. That’s like hiding vegetables in the meatloaf; some ways of getting the material across are more palatable than others. This e-course presents the material through culture, business and fashion-related anecdotes and examples, without the usual cut–and-dried problem/solution presentation of material. Dr. Camacho believes the fundamental issue with the earnings gap is differences between the way women and men communicate. She developed this e-course to help women become more powerful communicators and command higher salaries.
The e-course takes women through a virtual tour of five international cities, beginning with our Charleston. Other destinations include New York, London, Paris and Buenos Aires. Each city relates to a theme, and each daily lesson covers a facet of leadership communication, such as personal energy management, building and sharing a vision, developing one’s signature style and establishing executive presence. Participants learn powerful communication techniques, including body language and mindset patterns, which build self confidence in a new way.
