Trident Academy senior Luke Jeresaty, 16, won first place at the annual SCISA High School Math Meet in Sumter on Jan. 15.

“I’ve been going to math meets since sixth grade,” “Jeresaty said, “and to be able to win and hold a trophy was unbelievable.”

The math meet is composed of an hour-long written mathematics test followed by a speed round, where students answer five questions and are given one minute per question.

This year, 18 private schools competed, bringing more than 150 students from across the state, including Aiken, Beaufort, Newberry and Holly Hill. Local schools included Trident Academy, Colleton Preparatory School, Charleston Collegiate School and Dorchester Academy.

The math meet was composed of algebra, geometry, and logic problems.

Jeresaty has placed fourth and sixth in previous math meets. This year he scored 45 points, the most points overall.

His teammates and math teacher Brenda Alvanos supported and cheered him on throughout the meet. He said everything he was asked was something he remembered learning from his teachers.

“My dream is to be a video game designer,” said Jeresaty, “but I’m keeping my mind open for a lot of different options. I hope I can do some great things someday.”

South Carolina Independent Schools Association (SCISA) is a non-profit association of independent schools with a total of 105 member schools. SCISA holds student activities every year including drama festivals, spelling bees, chess tournaments and math meets.
