Serena Williams is back in a big way, thanks to the Family Circle Cup team.
The day after announcing the No. 2 ranked women's tennis player in the world officially joined the player field for the 41st Family Circle Cup, officials unveiled a large banner of Williams in front of the stadium, Friday morning.
The banner measures 47 feet wide and 40 feet tall. It can easily visible from neighboring Interstate 526.
The banner features the 5-foot-9-inch tennis superstar in action. By comparison, the banner is nearly seven times her height.
Williams joins her sister, Venus, and Samantha Stosur in the fast-assembling field of tennis standouts. The Cup is held March 30-April 7.
Williams won the event last year before reeling off multiple wins throughout the season, including Wimbledon, the Olympics, the US Open and WTA Championships. In six Charleston appearances, she has a record of 17-4.
“The Family Circle Cup is one of my favorite tournaments to play on the WTA Tour,” Williams said in a news release. “I love the great fans, the tournament history and everything Charleston has to offer on and off the court. I'm definitely looking forward to defending my title there this spring.”
Williams, an 18-year veteran of the sport, has earned more prize money than any other female tennis player in history. She has 47 WTA single titles, 15 Grand Slam single titles, 13 Grand Slam doubles titles and 724 career victories.
