Keys for Hope to hold key drive

  • Wednesday, February 6, 2013

The Keys for Hope organization is asking the Charleston community to help keep an important project going. Pitch in by donating old and unwanted keys for a massive recycling and fundraising initiative, spearheaded by local children. Various businesses have offered to serve as collection sites and have buckets waiting to collect thousands of keys to be recycled and turned into symbols of hope for Charleston’s homeless. The effort is working to raise money to help build the new shelter and soup kitchen for Crisis Ministries.

For the month of February, the goal is to collect 10,000 keys. Gather up your random keys that are no longer used, and drop them into the collection buckets located at:

· Wonder Works toy stores (Mount Pleasant, West Ashley and Kiawah)

· East Cooper Lock & Safe (Mount Pleasant - Chuck Dawley)

· Royall Ace Hardware (Mount Pleasant - Coleman Boulevard)

· ECO Fitness (Mount Pleasant - Highway 17N)

· Century 21 Real Estate (Park West Realty/Mount Pleasant)

· Chick-fil-A (North Mount Pleasant/Highway 17)

· Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church

Keys for Hope was started in October, 2011, by a group of kids (ages 8-11) in Mount Pleasant, who wanted to make a difference in their community by using their creativity. In an effort to raise money and awareness for the local homeless shelter, the project aims to engage kids of all ages by decorating recycled, painted keys and turning them into beautiful symbols of hope. A donation of $5/key is suggested and keys can then be worn as necklaces, key chains, backpack charms, ornaments and zipper pulls. So far, Keys for Hope has raised over $30,000 for the cause and has involved over 500 kids in the initiative.
