Daniel Island Academy was awarded the Spare The Air - Outstanding School at a ceremony, held Friday. The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control recognized Daniel Island Academy as an environmental leader making voluntary commitments to promote and practice air quality improvement.
The Spare The Air award is awarded to those environmental leaders that demonstrate continuous environmental improvement through such practices as energy conservation, behavioral modifications, and other strategies to improve air quality.
Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr., accepting the award on behalf of the school said, “This wonderful school had the great idea to help make our air cleaner. Daniel Island Academy should be proud of their accomplishment.”
Daniel Island Academy was recognized for its efforts in implementing an anti-idling campaign and for bringing awareness to its community. The school implemented the Breathe Better (B2) project by educating staff, students and parents on the negative health and environmental impact of vehicle idling. The school encourages teachers to attend educational workshops and bring back ideas that educate their classroom.
Speaking to the children attending the ceremony, Catherine Templeton, director of S.C. DHEC, said, “Take a deep breath. You are smarter and have more energy because you just took a breath of clean air due to this wonderful initiative to improve the air at your school.”
