The Wando girls track and field team proved it was a program to be reckoned with last season. Coach Marie Domin wants the Warriors to continue the streak this year after finishing second in the state last year.

It was Wando's best finish since 1975, and it capped off a season that included a region championship and multiple invitational wins. “Since we do have a young team, No. 1 on our list is teamwork,” Domin said. “Then, we can build off that for success. We hope to return to the state meet and take more people to the qualifier in a variety of events, giving us a better shot at taking the msot we can to the state meet.”

Sarah Lee, who competes in the pole vault, sprints and hurdles, is a co-captain with Angelica Collins, who competes in jumps, relays and sprints. Domin called them “versatile athletes and captains that we hope will lead the team and break personal barriers that will take them and the team to the next level.”

Sisters Georgia and Rosa Marie Compton are standouts in the distance events with top state rankings. Junior Kendall Mercer is returning to her role in pole vault, high jump and various running events.

Domin credited her whole coaching stuff for being examples for the runners. “We work together everyday to create a team environment that is run and physically and mentally demanding at the same tiem,” she said. “We have so many volunteers and assistants to help with all of these events. It would be impossible without them.”

The Taco Bell Classic and Coaches Classic will be good measurements during the season for how the Warriors are progressing. “The young, talented runners may need time to be among the fastest in the state,” Domin said, “so the returning leadership and talent will help younger runners make a smooth transition from just having fun to a serious competitor.”

Bishop England

A new season brings new teammates and schedules, but to Bishop England girls track and field coach Tony Colizzi, expectations are always the same.

“As with any season, our goal is to win the state championship,” he said. “The girls are coming off a very successful season in which they placed third in the state.”

The Battling Bishops grabbed South Carolina's bronze despite a young roster. Notable returners include Michelle Lussier, Emily DiBona, Julia O'Donnell, Bea DiBona, Haleigh Clutters and Michele Boykin. Boykin and Lussier will join the team after the basketball season.

“We also have a lot of new girls coming out who look like they will contribute to the girls' team success,” Colizzi said, noting McKenna Weatherford, Hollis Weatherford and Jo Jo Tompkins.

Like their male counterparts, the girls group will be tested at the Coaches Classic, Father Kelly Classic – a Bishop England-hosted invitational, and the Taco Bell meet.

Colizzi noted the Bishops' strengths are in distance events, hurdles and the pole vault. Sprinting and jumping events are areas for improvement. Bishop England is searching for a legitimate contender in the throwing events to provide valuable points in the state championships.
