  • Friday, February 22, 2013

Calling all theatregoers. The second annual Theatre Charleston Awards season kicks off in August, and Theatre Charleston wants you. Charleston-area residents with a keen interest in live theatre are invited to apply for membership in the official 2013/2014 Theatre Charleston Awards voting body. Applications can be downloaded at www.theatrecharleston.com/awards and submitted to Emily Wilhoit at emily@theatrecharleston.com, P.O. Box 279 Charleston, SC 29402, or to any Theatre Charleston member theatre by March 1.

The Theatre Charleston awards are the Lowcountry’s comprehensive theatre awards created by The League of Charleston Theatres to recognize excellence in theatrical performance, production and design. The community boasts some of the most talented actors, directors and designers in the Southeast, and the Theatre Charleston awards allow the public to acknowledge their exceptional work, all while expanding visibility for Charleston’s diverse theatre community.

The 2012/2013 voting body has already begun to express their appreciation for the awards and enthusiasm for their role as voters. “One of the most rewarding aspects of being a voter is discovering what a rich and talented artistic community we have here in Charleston,” states current voter Mary DeMartino. “I’ve seen some wonderful performances and have truly been astonished by the ever-increasing quality of local productions. I have learned to appreciate every company’s hard work and burgeoning excellence.” Barbara Fox agrees, “Being [a voter] has given me the opportunity to make my voice heard in an arena that I care about deeply.” Valerie Morris, Dean of the College of Charleston School of the Arts, adds, “I became a voter because it allows me to provide a real service to the theatre community. So far, this has been a terrific experience.”

Theatre Charleston seeks patrons, artists, educators and journalists with the critical thinking skills necessary to effectively rate all areas of a production. Those interested in being a part of the 2013/2014 Theatre Charleston Awards voting body can visit www.theatrecharleston.com/awards to download the “Theatre Charleston Award Voter Application.” Complimentary tickets to all TC Award eligible productions are provided to voters to assist them in fulfilling their commitment to attend at least eight productions at a minimum of five different theatres throughout the season. Further details on the requirements and responsibilities of voters can be found within the application.

All applications will be reviewed by the TC awards review committee and board of directors, and finalists will be notified in early May. A limited number of voters will be selected.

Join Theatre Charleston in this exciting program by applying for membership in the prestigious Theatre Charleston awards voting body. Together everyone can promote live theatre and increase awareness of the richness of the local performing arts community.
