A bishop isn't usually associated as a feared competitor. But, because Bishop England put boxing gloves on its bishop mascot, it gained entry into a national contest searching for the best high school sports mascot in the country.
The USA Today high school sports staff picked 255 unique mascots throughout the United States and formed a bracket for the public to decide the winner. Five mascots were chosen from each state. Voting began Monday afternoon, and the competition starts in the state round through March 5.
State winners move on to the regional round, featuring six regions from 51 state winners. The regional round voting begins March 6 and ends March 14.
From there, the six regional winners are left up to a national vote from March 15-25. The winner gets bragging rights, as well as $2,000 toward its athletic department. Second place gets $1,000, third $500, fourth $250 and fifth $100.
Bishop England is matched up in the state round against the Lake View Wild Gators, Marion Swamp Foxes, Mullins Auctioneers and Travelers Rest Devildogs.
