Mike Perkis, current mayor pro tem on Sullivan’s Island Town Council, declared he was running for mayor in the upcoming May election.
Current mayor Carl Smith decided not to seek re-election and no other island resident stepped up to challenge Perkis.
“I have to admit I was very surprised there were no other candidates for mayor,” Perkis said. “I feel honored and humbled by the support shown by our community.”
That doesn’t mean he’s putting his candidacy on cruise control, though. “There is still substantial work to keep Sullivan’s Island the special place it is, and I’m committed to continue to work hard for the next four years to meet the trust placed in me by the residents of this community.”
The Charleston County Board of Elections and the State Ethics Commission approved all candidates who filed for the May 7 election, including Perkis. Sarah Church, Chauncey Clark, Billy Matthews, Susan Middaugh, Pat O’Neil were all given the go-aheads on their campaigns for three open council seats.
