Former Miss America chronicles how she survived abuse at the hands of her father

Darkness to Light spring luncheon will feature guest speaker Marilyn Van Derbur, former Miss America.

Please join Darkness to Light at the first ever, Darkness to Light Spring Luncheon featuring guest speaker Marilyn Van Derbur. The luncheon will be held March 20 at 11:30 a.m. at the Daniel Island Club.

This former Miss America is also the author of “Miss America By Day” which chronicles her journey to becoming a survivor of sexual abuse by her father.

Marilyn Van Derbur was crowned Miss America while she was a student at the University of Colorado, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She went on to become a successful motivational speaker. Because of her work motivating adults and teenagers, she was named “Outstanding Woman Speaker in America,” inducted into the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame and was the first woman given the highest speaking award possible by the National Speakers Association. She has produced 24 films, two of which won national andinternational awards. As a childhood incest survivor, she speaks nationwide about child sexual abuse prevention and recovery. Additionally, she has devoted much of her adult life to raising national awareness and understanding of sexual abuse and its long term effects. In 1993, she co-founded two national not-for-profit organizations, the American Coalition for Abuse Awareness and One Voice, dedicated to public education and strengthening laws protecting victims of sexual abuse. She has also written a book, “Miss America by Day: Lessons Learned from Ultimate Betrayals and Unconditional Love,” which chronicles her journey to become a survivor of sexual abuse.
