eWeek competitions spark Lowcountry students’ enthusiasm for engineering

  • Thursday, March 7, 2013

The Citadel’s 14th annual eWeek Fair was held Saturday, Feb. 16, attracting more than 100 Lowcountry school students who put their engineering skills to the test in the Lego robotics competition and the craft stick bridge competition as well as the trebuchet competition.

“Our goal is to spark students’ interest in engineering, math and science by showing them that method, design and problem solving can ultimately be fun,” said Mark McKinney, professor of electrical engineering and Citadel eWeek organizer. “And it works, too. The enthusiasm was palpable.”

In the robotics competitions, students pitted their team-built Lego robots against each other in one-on-one baseball and golf games that required robots to think and make decisions on their own. Student teams competing in the bridge competition constructed bridges from craft sticks and wood glue. The bridges were judged on best structural design, original design and craftsmanship.

The results of this year’s competition are:

Robotics Competition Golf Competition

First Place: Cranium – Charleston Math and Science Charter

Second Place: Team Solo – Laing Middle School

Honorable Mention: Domo Arigato – Berkeley High School

Honorable Mention: J.A.J. – Berkeley Middle School
