March is all about fashion in Charleston, a historic city with a fashion forward sensibility. The Art Institute of Charleston kicked off the month with “Branching Out,” the first runway show ever presented on the campus.
“Branching Out” embodies spring and new green growth – the growth of the fashion scene in Charleston and the expansion of The Art Institute of Charleston into fashion design. Guests enjoyed a red carpet entrance and refreshments prior to the show.
“Branching Out” presented new looks by four designers:
• Raphael Cox, contestant on Season 9 of Project Runway
• Vartika Vikram, one of Charleston Fashion Week’s emerging designers in 2012
• Julie Wheat of “Cavortress,” one of Charleston Fashion Week’s emerging designers in 2011 and a faculty member at The Art Institute of Charleston
• Ashley Martin of “Clewis Reid,” one of Charleston Fashion Week’s emerging designers in 2008 and a faculty member at The Art Institute of Charleston
The Art Institute of Charleston has offered a bachelor of arts in Fashion & Retail Management program since 2008.
The bachelor of fine arts in Fashion Design program was introduced in January 2013. Current students in the Fashion & Retail Management program planned, styled and ran “Branching Out.” Paul Mitchell The School Charleston provided hair and makeup styling.
Newton Myvett, president of The Art Institute of Charleston, said “Our new program in Fashion Design is a perfect fit for Charleston’s growing fashion community and we are excited to introduce it with a spectacular fashion show. We hope the community will come out to enjoy the celebration and to kick off what is sure to be an exciting month of fashion here in Charleston.”
The Art Institute of Charleston, a branch of The Art Institute of Atlanta, is located at 24 North Market Street, Charleston, SC 29401. For information, visit www.artinstitutes.edu/charleston, call 866-211-0107 or email aicscadm@aii.edu.
