The History Press is pleased to introduce the new title: “Arsenal of History: The Powder Magazine of South Carolina” by R. Alan Stello Jr. and edited by John R. Young.

The Powder Magazine was completed circa 1713 as an arsenal to safely store munitions in the South Carolina colonial capital of Charles Town, serving continuously in defense through the 1740s and periodically until the 1820s.

Rescued from destruction in 1902, the building has served as a museum for more than a century, inspiring countless other historic conservation efforts.

Museum Director Alan Stello presents the story of the state’s oldest public building by establishing connections between the arsenal and the significant episodes it has witnessed.

Readers will enjoy an introductory look at South Carolina colonial military history while gaining an appreciation for this icon of history and preservation.

A native of Charleston, Alan Stello is the director of The Powder Magazine museum and the president of Historic Places of Charleston. Educated at Charleston Southern University (history and political science), Strayer University (public administration) and through the National Association for Interpretation, Stello’s expertise is museum administration and educational program development.

As an eighteenth-century-weapons enthusiast, Stello volunteers as a living historian for several heritage-based organizations.

He enjoys listening to classical music, woodworking, watching bad movies, playing punk rock guitar, studying political science, camping at Colonial Dorchester, being a citizen of the Red Sox Nation and traveling with his wife, Kelly.
