April brings special events to Charleston County Parks.
When: Sunday, April 7, noon to 6 p.m.
Where: James Island County Park.
Details: Bringing Louisiana to the Lowcountry, Cajun Fest is a full-day of foot-stompin’ Zydeco music, Cajun and Creole foods, children’s activities and all around ragin’ Cajun entertainment. Enjoy live music throughout the day by Zydeco acts “Swamp Pop” Shelly Waters, Unknown Tongues and Sidewalk Zydeco. Don’t forget to sign up for the 2:30 p.m. crawfish eating contest! Food and beverages will be available for purchase. No coolers, outside beverages, or pets permitted. Admission: $10 for adults (13 and up); free for children 12 and under and Gold Pass holders.

Details: Pets, their owners and the whole family are invited to take part in a weekend of exhibits, demonstrations, rescue groups and entertainment at Pet Fest. Details: Formerly known as the East Coast Canoe and Kayak Festival, this newly expanded 23rd annual event is a full- weekend immersion in the history, technique, hands-on experience, and fun of canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. New this year is the Try It Zone, where you can try your hand at a variety of outdoor activities including slacklining, archery, climbing and more. Register in advance for access to paddling classroom lectures, unlimited boat demos from the world’s leading manufacturers, social opportunities with the world’s top instructors, on-water classes and paddling trips. Where: Caw Caw Interpretive Center
Details: Explore your wild side on a scenic run through the trails of this 654-acre site rich in natural and historical resources. Caw Caw Interpretive Center features areas favored for many species of rare wildlife. An award ceremony with light food and beverages will be held immediately afterward. Online registration will end Apr. 26. Participants ages 10-15 are welcomed to register, but must be accompanied by an adult chaperone. Fee: $34/$28. CCR discount is available.

Where: Mount Pleasant Pier
Details: Spend an evening dancing on the scenic Mount Pleasant Pier to live music performed by Groove Train! Beverages will be available for purchase. Only 800 tickets will be sold. Advance purchase is recommended. In the event of cancellation, tickets will be good for any 2013 Shaggin’ on the Cooper event. Series passes also available. Call 795-4386 for more information. Details: Mount Pleasant Pier is proud to be a part of this annual event hosted by the Town of Mount Pleasant. The festival features a boat parade and ceremonial blessing of the shrimp and fishing fleet, plus seafood samplings from local restaurants, live music, an arts and crafts show, shag dancing and shrimp-eating contests.
