Group forms to help women get elected to office in SC

  • Thursday, March 21, 2013

Project XX is a new initiative whose mission is to increase the number of progressive women elected or appointed to office in South Carolina. Two organizations have been created to accomplish this: a 501(c) 4 non-profit and a Federal Super PAC.

The short-term goal of Project XX is to move the percentage of women on boards and commissions from the current mean of 27 percent to the legally mandated goal of 51 percent, thus reflecting the percentage of women that make up the state’s population. “South Carolina is not an all-male state,” said co-founder Nikki Hardin, “but it’s fostering a men-only state of mind when it comes to serving in public office.”

Future plans include identifying public office elections that provide good opportunities for successful campaigns to elect women.

The Super PAC will launch campaigns using a variety of professional tactics including polling, research, opposition tracking, data management, social media and paid media.

Currently, there is only one women serving in the state Senate and only 19 women out of 123 in the House.

“The lack of women involved in the political process deprives the state of one of its valuable natural resources: the talent, intelligence and strength of women leaders,” said co-founder Ginny Deerin.

The organization is based in Charleston, but will be active in races throughout the state.
