A police officer initiated a traffic stop on a driver who ran a red light. The driver signaled that he was going to stop and pull into a nearby gas station. The driver slowed as if to stop and then turned sharply, according to the police report. The driver flew past the gas pumps and proceeded to burn out in the parking lot and speed off through a stop sign and back onto the highway. The report said the officer continued to follow the suspect. The driver made a sudden left turn and sped down a side road.

The driver suddenly came to a stop. The officer’s car was still in motion when the driver stood up from his seat, reached into his front waist band, turned toward the officer and removed a silver handgun and pointed it at the officer’s car, according to the report.

The officer stopped his patrol car and the suspect ran off into the woods. He did not stop upon the officer’s commands. The officer called for backup and gave responding units a full description of the fleeing suspect.

In the meantime, the passenger was laid out in the abandoned car. He was removed from the vehicle and found to have no weapons on him.

A search of the suspect’s vehicle turned up a pill bottle with mixed pills, a baggie of white powder and a baggie of green plant material. Two debit cards with different names were confiscated as well.

The suspect was eventually located and his car was towed.

He was taken to jail and charged with unlawful carrying of a pistol, pointing and presenting firearm, failure to stop for blue lights, driving under suspension 3rd, and simple possession of marijuana. The white powder was sent to the lab for testing. A charge for possession with intent to distribute will be made pending positive ab test results.
