Megan Nordoff, of Montessori of Mount Pleasant, has been selected as a Top 10 Finalist for “America’s Most Innovative Teacher,” which opens the door for a possible $10,000 grant for the school if the educator emerges victorious.

Megan Nordoff, who leads a team of educators at Montessori of Mount Pleasant (MMP),

joins nine other teachers from all over the country in the magazine’s “Great American Teach-Off” contest, which posts videos from the teachers while allowing viewers and readers to vote.

Nordoff has invested in her training and understanding of child development by becoming certified in Montessori, Orton-Gillingham, Redirecting Childrens Behavior, RIE (www.rie.org) and Pikler. She uses this knowledge and her 18 years of educational experience to mentor and guide the potential of her students.

“I believes good education is one built on a strong foundation valuing relationships and the preparation of the adult to follow the child. The child is wired to innovate and if we follow him, innovation will occur,” states Nordoff.

You may already be familiar with Ms. Megan and MMP School - after all the program has been in a part of the greater Charleston community since 1977 and under Megan’s mentorship for more than 12 years. Even those not directly touched on a daily basis by the work and innovation coming from this small school previously described as having a long shadow have seen its advocacy in action.

Nordoff speaks directly to innovation in the classroom. Her practice supports conservation, early literacy, relationship based schools, Slow-Food concepts, nature education - and the list does go on. Perhaps you had an opportunity to walk through the Tipi along the marsh of Shem Creek. Or maybe your child attends the public charter school founded by the organization in 2003. Or perhaps you were able to attend one if its many adult educational events supporting parents and professionals working with young children. Through her every day living and working with our youngest citizens, Megan Nordoff provides a model of excellence to make our community proud.

How will Nordoff utilize the $10,000 grant if she were to win? She shares a vision to build a mobile farm extension to her classroom linking children with agriculture that she can share not only with her students, but also with those in neighboring schools.

The public now has an opportunity to share her work on a larger platform - and the school is asking for your help. Please vote online at http://budurl.com/VoteTeachOff. Everyday you vote gets Ms. Megan one step closer to helping out the kids, the school and community.
