Runners and walkers from all over the Lowcountry will gather together April 13 to participate in the fourth annual Run for Adela 5K presented by Fleet Landing Restaurant.

This is the only official 5K in Charleston held on the Sullivan’s Island beach.

The race is in memory of Adela Holmes Cook, an 18-year-old Charleston native who passed away in 2009 from injuries sustained in a golf cart accident while on vacation in the Bahamas.

Last year’s race was supported by more than 900 registrants of all ages. Since the inaugural race in 2010, this annual event has raised more than $145,000 for the Adela Holmes Cook Foundation benefitting Camp Happy Days, a non-profit organization that provides a carefree environment for kids and teens battling cancer.

Proceeds from this year’s race will specifically fund the third annual Camp Happy Days’ Extreme Teen Water Weekend on Wadmalaw Island as well as efforts supported by Charleston Waterkeeper, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the public’s right to swimmable, drinkable, fishable water.

The Extreme Teen Water Weekend will feature watersports, boating, fishing and fellowship among teens with cancer. The Run for Adela 5K is symbolic of Adela’s passion for spending time outdoors in her cherished hometown.

The race will start and finish at Station 16 and will begin at 8 a.m. Prizes will include bicycles, a weekend getaway at Wild Dunes Resort and gift certificates to restaurants, spas and other local businesses.

The Adela Holmes Cook Foundatio is a non-profit foundation founded in 2010 supporting local Charleston charities in remembrance of Adela Holmes Cook.
