Dare to tackle the Bulldog Challenge

  • Monday, April 1, 2013

Do you dare to take The Citadel’s Bulldog Challenge? Have you got what it takes to excel in The Citadel’s 17th annual Bulldog Challenge on Saturday, April 20? The Citadel dares you to try.

The Bulldog Challenge is a grueling six-mile (10k) endurance race that will push you and your team to the limit while sucking the energy right out of you.

Your team will encounter obstacles that will add “friction” to your 10k run; what you once thought of as easy will become seemingly impossible; but you won’t want to quit because you will be having so much fun.

The race, which is open to the public, has grown into a nationally recognized event attracting competitors from all over the U.S.

It is the longest running endurance competition in the Lowcountry. When the Bulldog Challenge began there were 275 racers. Last year, the race attracted 724 competitors to Charleston and The Citadel.

This year’s field of racers is expected to surpass that. Regular registration is available until April 3 with tickets priced at $40 per racer, late registration at $50 per racer until April 17.

On race day, your team of four will work your way through challenges with names like “House of Pain” and “Guadalcanal.” Before reaching the finish line you will slug through the Lowcountry’s famous pluff mud with a 25-pound sand bag on your back.

Then, you will run the steps of Johnson Hagood Stadium, haul water jugs, wrestle giant truck tires and climb ropes on the Marine Corps Obstacle Course.

To keep everyone on task and on course, Citadel Marines and NROTC cadets will yell at you and encourage you along the way.

The Bulldog Challenge raises about $29,000 a year to support scholarships selected by The Citadel Semper Fidelis Society, sponsor of the competition.

This year, proceeds will go to the Semper Fi Society Scholarship Fund, which provides financial aid to a participating member of the society enrolled in NROTC and working toward a commission in the United States Marine Corps.

The Bulldog Challenge raises about $29,000 annually.
