The Charleston County Board of Elections and Voter Registration (BEVR) office is providing information to residents who will vote in the 1st Congressional District Special Republican Runoff Election.

A Republican Runoff election will be held on Tuesday, April 2, and polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Registered voters who cannot vote in person may be eligible to vote by absentee ballot. Absentee ballots may be obtained from the Board of Elections and Voter Registration Office in Charleston County. Citizens may call 843-744-8683, or send an email to absentee@charlestoncounty.org to inquire about the availability of absentee ballots.

State law prohibits voters from voting in more than one primary election held on the same day. Voters may not vote in both parties’ runoffs. Furthermore, voters who voted in one party’s primary are not eligible to vote in the other party’s runoff election. However, voters who did not vote in either primary on March 19 may vote in either party’s runoff on April 2. All District 1 voters will fall into one of these three categories:

1) Those who voted in the Democratic Primary are not eligible to vote in the Republican Runoff (there is no Democratic Runoff)

2) Those who voted in the Republican Primary are eligible to vote in the Republican Runoff.

3) Those who did not vote in either the Democratic or Republican Primary are eligible to vote in the Republican Runoff.

On Thursday, April 4, 2013, the Charleston County Board of Canvassers will hold a hearing at 10 a.m. to determine the validity of all provisional ballots casts in the primary election, and to certify election results in the Republican Runoff. This hearing will be held at the elections office, 4367 Headquarters Road, North Charleston.

The list of precincts and polling places can be found online at http://charlestoncounty.org/Departments/BEVR/NOTICE%20OF%20ELECTION%20-%20US%20House%20District%201%20March%2019%202013.pdf.

Voters who have any questions regarding where they are supposed to vote or if they live in Congressional District 1 may contact the Charleston County Board of Elections and Voter Registration office at 843-744-8683 or visit https://info.scvotes.sc.gov/eng/voterinquiry/VoterInformationRequest.aspx?PageMode=VoterInfo

The other important change for this runoff election (it was also in effect for the primary election) is that Photo ID is in effect for Charleston County, and BEVR Executive Director Joseph Debney said the county office has only seen about 200 people come in to get IDs. He wants to make sure everyone is aware of the new change, and is striving to get out information that the S.C. Election Commission has provided.
