The 36th annual Cooper River Bridge Run will be held Saturday morning.

With more than 40,000 participants, it's easy to get lost among the figures and size of the event.

So, let's break it down.

It's a 10k race starting on Coleman Boulevard near Moultrie Middle School in Mount Pleasant.

It concludes after a dash – or walk – over the Ravenel Bridge toward Marion Square in downtown Charleston.

Starts are staggered with wheelchair participants going first, then runners and walkers. The wheelchair race begins at 7:25 a.m. and the rest go at 8 a.m.

There is a Finish Festival and Awards Ceremony in Marion Square at 8:30 with live entertainment and vendors. It concludes at noon.

Solomon Deksisa, of Ethiopia, won last year's overall event with a time of 29:37, earning a check for $10,000 in the process.

The last time an American male won was 1991. 1995 was the most recent time that an American female had the best women's time.

It is the only race in the state sanctioned by USA Track and Field and is considered as an elite event.

Heads up, participants: Publisher Vickey Boyd will carry her camera as she participates as a walker, editor Sully Witte will be taking pictures on the corner of Pelzer Drive and Coleman Boulevard and freelance photographer Sparky Witte will be on the bridge.
