Ah, summer vacation. Isn’t it great? Your college student gets time to relax, work a summer job and hang out with friends at the beach. It’s also a perfect time to earn a few college credits at Trident Technical College before returning to his or her college in the fall.

Students earning credits at TTC while pursuing a degree at another college or university are called “transient students.” We welcome them to take classes at TTC with the understanding that they plan to return to their home institution to complete their degree. There are a couple of great reasons for a student to become a transient student at TTC this summer.

The first reason is that it pays to plan ahead. Taking courses over the summer can result in a lighter load, and possibly better grades, in the fall. A freshman pre-med student at the University of South Carolina visited TTC’s Mount Pleasant Campus during his spring break to register for a summer biology course. He is planning ahead now and will enjoy a more manageable course schedule in the fall.

I can personally attest to the effectiveness of this strategy because I did the same thing once many years ago while at The Citadel. I needed to retake statistics, so I also knocked out a sociology course at the same time. This decision helped my GPA — I could really focus on those two courses, so I was able to get super grades during the summer. Having a lighter load for fall semester helped me to keep my grades up.

The second reason is that summer at TTC is a great opportunity to retake a course or two for a lower tuition cost. If your college student has struggled a little bit while at college — we may not like to think about it, but it does happen — he or she can retake those courses at TTC while home for the summer. Tuition at Trident Technical College is only $153.45 per credit hour for residents of the tri-county area, making TTC a great investment for transient students.

Taking summer courses at TTC kills not two, but three, birds with one stone. Your student can enjoy the summer at home in Mount Pleasant, save money living at home and paying lower tuition cost at TTC, and take (or retake) courses with credits that transfer.

The process for transient registration is very easy. The first step for your student is to give us a call at 958-5810 or drop in to TTC’s Mount Pleasant Campus at 1125 John Dilligard Lane (next to Wando Crossing shopping center on Highway 17). We would be happy to meet with you and your college student to discuss the best plan of action to make the most of this summer.
