The Mount Pleasant Exchange Club announced Mike Smith, of Squad 507, as its recipient for this year’s Firefighter of the Year award, March 27 at Zeus Grill.
Six chiefs and sergeants from the Mount Pleasant Fire Department were on hand to honor Smith, according to Exchange Club spokeswoman Sheryl Bidwell.
Smith, a Massachusetts native, began his fire service career in 2004 in Arlington County. Two years later, he became a paramedic.
In 2008, Smith moved back to his hometown of Hanson, Mass. to work for the city’s fire department as a firefighter and paramedic. Now with Squad 507 in Mount Pleasant, which is a quick-response vehicle operating out of Station 7 on Bowman Road, he is continuing his service as both a firefighter and paramedic. He was hired in 2010, according to provided information.
Smith also is a medical field training officer, peer fitness trainer and leader of the tactical EMS team. He resides in Summerville with his wife and two children.
