No ocean wide enough

Musician and songwriter, Dorian Medd, a resident of Mount Pleasant, has just released his fourth CD album of original music entitled “My Dog Has Fleas,” which is also the name adopted by Dorian and his Japanese musical partner, Haruhiko Futara.

Haruhiko Futara and Dorian Medd discovered they were musicians, songwriters and dog lovers when they met in 1988 while Dorian was vacationing in Japan. As an experiment, they began shuttling 8-track multi-track tapes across the Pacific Ocean. Futara would write and record some basic tracks and then Dorian would add additional parts, and vice-versa. That went on for two years and many great songs were developed out of this unconventional collaboration. Unfortunately, life happened and Futara and Medd lost track of one another. Nineteen years later, Medd stumbled upon Futara’s name on the internet, contacted him, and they learned that they were both still very fond of the music they had composed together all those years ago and decided to give it another go. They reworked and recorded the original songs and contributed a few new tracks using the latest in DAW technology.

Medd began playing in bands and writing music when he was 13. A couple years later, he met Bob Shaw, and a lasting, rewarding and successful musical partnership, Medd & Shaw, began and continued until the summer of ’82. Between them hundreds of their original songs made it into this dynamic folk/rock duos repertoire. Medd sings and plays electric and acoustic guitars, keyboards, percussion, and various other instruments. Extensive tours under the direction of Dymaxion Talent Agency allowed the duo to hone their skills and build a tight and cohesive unit. A recording contract with independent label, Riser Records, led to five successful vinyl record releases, a publishing contract and the opportunity to work with great musicians Steven Drake (the Odds), and award winning composer Patric Caird (The Powder Blues).

After Medd & Shaw, and a few subsequent bands, Medd emerged simply as Dorian M. He was joined by lyricist and author, Jo Nichols (author and creator of Cackleberries), and penned dozens of high octane songs, four of which made it on to a Dorian M. EP entitled Soft Touch, and produced by the famed Guy Sobell, (formerly of the Chessmen and producer of Disco Queen Denise McCann). Jamie Bowers, Daryl Burgess and Wendy Gregson also contributed to the EP.

Futara started playing bass when he was 18 and formed and played in a number of bands over the next three years. He began composing and recording original songs in 1985. Futara plays electric and acoustic guitars, bass and piccolo bass, keyboards and drums sequenced with digital music software. Under the direction of award winning musical director, Yoko Narahashi, Futara played bass in the orchestra of the inspiring 70s musical Runaways.

Medd and his wife and son currently live in the Hamlin neighborhood.
