Apprenticeship Carolina, an integral part of the South Carolina Technical College System, announced that Michelin North America is sponsoring a structured two-year program that will offer classroom and practical hands-on experience for their Maintenance Technician. The apprenticeship program is in conjunction with the Michelin Scholars program and will lead to a full associate’s degree for the apprentice.
“Building a skilled workforce and increasing the pipeline for skilled labor in advanced manufacturing is very important to Michelin North America,” said Steve Burry, employee relations project manager for Michelin North America. “Our registered apprenticeship program aligns very well with this goal. We understand the critical role our employees play in the success of our organization. This program demonstrates Michelin’s commitment to our people, our customers and, ultimately, our community.”
An apprenticeship is a time-tested method of employee development that combines supervised on-the-job learning and job-related education. A program “registered” with the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) shows an employer’s visible commitment to developing a high-quality workforce that meets nationally recognized training standards. Michelin’s apprenticeship program is competency based with approximately 1,110 hours of job-related education. Michelin will be partnering with technical colleges across the state to deliver the job-related education for all maintenance staff.
Since its inception in 2007, Apprenticeship Carolina has played a key role in growing apprenticeship participation across the state. The number of participating organizations has grown from 90 to 583. During that same time, the number of apprentices in the state has grown exponentially from 777 to 7,137.
“While there is a large pool of labor available, many local employers struggle to find the skilled workers needed to grow their business,” said Brad Neese, director of Apprenticeship Carolina. “Apprenticeship Carolina and the technical colleges across our state are committed to bridging this skills gap in South Carolina. Partnerships like this with Michelin demonstrate our commitment while working to increase South Carolina’s overall competitiveness.”
