East Cooper high school sports fans, you’re in for a treat this weekend and next.
Two lacrosse teams advanced to the 4A state championships with wins Tuesday night, and the Wando rugby club program is playing for a state title of its own after a victory this past week.
The Wando boys lacrosse team crushed A.C. Flora, Tuesday night, 16-2 to advance to the state final against Fort Mill. The Warriors are the top-ranked team in South Carolina. Carson Horner, Tucker Dodson and Andrew Phelan had three goals apiece. Fort Mill edged Greenville, 11-10, in the Upper State final.
The state championship game will be held at White Knoll High School, Saturday at 1:30 p.m. If Wando successfully defends its title against Fort Mill, it will be the first time a school has won back-to-back championships since the sport was sanctioned by the SCHSL four years ago.
Bishop England upset rival Wando in the girls Lower State final on Tuesday night, winning 15-13. The Battling Bishops, a No. 2 seed, knocked off the No. 1 seed, led by Jordan Mitchell’s five goals and one assist. Elena Bosco added five assists and four goals.
Wando’s Allie Bucknam continued her impressive postseason stat line with seven goals and one assist.
The girls state title game will begin Saturday at 11 a.m. at White Knoll. Bishop England is vying for its first lacrosse state championship.
The Wando rugby club team will attempt to knock defending champion Chapin off its perch, April 20, in the state title game at Crooked Creek Park.
Chapin is undefeated and have won three championships in program history. The match begins at 2 p.m.
