Symphony League announces scholarship winners

Nicholas Bentz, violin, from Charleston County School of the Arts, has won the third annual David and Karen Stahl Memorial College Scholarship of $2,500, the top award in the Charleston Symphony Orchestra League’s annual scholarship competition. His was one of 41 scholarships totaling $32,500 which were awarded to Lowcountry students in grades five through 12.

Winners of the $2,000 college scholarship awarded to graduating seniors who plan to major in music performance, therapy or education include; Abigail Kent, harp, homeschooled; Courtney Pourciaux, voice, Goose Creek High School; Liann Bova, violin, Charleston County School of the Arts; Julia Woodward, voice, Charleston County School of the Arts; and Karin McQuade, voice, Charleston County School of the Arts.

Matching Grant Scholarships of $500 for private study were awarded to the following six members of the Youth Orchestra of the Lowcountry: Nanako Shirai, violin, Charleston County School of the Arts; Sashank Sakamuri, cello, Academic Magnet High School; Benjamin Kremer, violin, Charleston Catholic; Emily Caron, bassoon, Wando High School; Daria Poe flute, homeschooled; and Sabrina Greene, violin, Charleston County School of the Arts.

Summer Study Scholarships of varying amounts are awarded to 29 students who are attending summer music camps and for summer private lessons. Recipients included Caleb Borick, piano, homeschooled; Shannon Fitzhenry, violin, homeschooled; Rachel Yoon, piano, Charleston County School of the Arts; Anna Kroninger, flute, homeschooled; Whitney Su, piano, Academic Magnet High School; Rachel Dawson, violin, Academic Magnet High School; Junru Yao, piano, Charleston County School of the Arts; Anna Tavormina, piano, Charleston County School of the Arts; Vivek Menon, violin, Academic Magnet High School; Elliott Cihlar, violin, Charleston County School of the Arts; Benjamin Kidder, cello, Charleston County School of the Arts;

Chelky Lin, piano, Stratford High School; Olivia Monty, clarinet, Moultrie Middle School; Eliza Turner, voice, Charleston County School of the Arts; Julia Whitten, piano, Pinewood Preparatory; Megan Santille, flute, Wando High School; Rose Holstein, violin, Cario Middle School; Shota Kohno, piano, Fort Johnson Middle School; Erica Kremer, piano, Charleston Catholic; Andrew Messersmith, violin, Rollings Middle School; Heather Kimbrell, flute, Wando High School; Destiny Meadows, clarinet, Charleston County School of the Arts; Haven Xu, piano, Academic Magnet High School; Jay Baek, piano, Charleston County School of the Arts;

Hayley Cash, violin, Buist Academy; Morgan Monty, flute, Moultrie Middle School; Marissa Honig, bassoon, Wando High School; Vivian Song, violin, Academic Magnet High School; and Timothy Moore, piano, Ashley Ridge High School.
