“The Sound of Music” is known around the world for its memorable songs and the stunning scenery in the movie. But this show has remained powerful since 1959 because it is also about things that matter to us all — finding full and meaningful lives, love and children, and having the courage to do what is right, even in the face of potentially devastating circumstances.

The story begins when Maria, a young postulant whose love of freedom battles her strict religious lifestyle, is sent by her Reverend Mother to be the governess to Captain von Trapp’s seven troublesome children. The family’s narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides an inspirational finale.

Bishop England’s production stars David Sanchez as Captain von Trapp, Dixon Graham as Maria and Sam Lawton as Max. The von Trapp family singers include Lara Brooksbank as Liesl, Donovan Thompson as Friedrich, Riley Graham as Louisa, Keegan Desciak as Kurt, Hannah Warren as Brigitta, Sarah Canterbury as Marta and Holly Hildenbrand as Gretl.

Performances are Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Bishop England Performing Arts Center on Daniel Island. Admission prices are $8 for adults and $5 or children under 7.
