Make it back-to-back state 4A lacrosse championships for the Wando boys lacrosse team.

The Warriors defeated Fort Mill, 8-5, this past Saturday afternoon in Lexington to win their second consecutive title. They have appeared in the finale three of the four years the SCHSL has sanctioned the sport.

The steady offensive power from C.J. Andersen, Carson Horner and Tucker Dodson led Wando throughout the playoffs. The trio combined for five goals.

Andrew Phelan, Chase Robinson and Fred Dotterer each added one goal. All-state goalie Trevor Pearson tallied 11 saves.

Bishop England

The Bishop England girls lacrosse team came up just shy of winning its first state championship in program history.

The Bishops fell to J.L. Mann, 15-14, this past Saturday afternoon in Lexington. Elena Bosco, Jordan Mitchell and Taylor Kennington had three goals apiece. Bosco also added a pair of assists.

Isabel Burnett and Cora Petyak each added two goals and Caitlin Greenho completed the team scoring total by finding the back of the net once. Petyak, who also had an assist, was one of two seniors on the roster – the other, Erin Heavey.

National tourney

Ten local girls lacrosse players qualified for the U.S. Lacrosse national championship high school game in May at Lehigh University. The athletes – from Wando, Bishop England and Academic Magnet – will compete in the Schoolgirls Division. It is considered a major college recruiting event.

Five Wando players: Allie Bucknam, Maggierose Connell, Christian Oliver, Alyssa Smith and Brenna Walsh qualified, according to the lacrosse association’s website. From Bishop England, Elena Bosco, Caitlin Greenho, Jordan Mitchell and Taylor Rice will also compete.

Hunter Leckonby represents Academic Magnet.

Those 10 are added to the SC Lower Atlantic State team. Players are referred by their respective high school coaches and only six players from each school are allowed to try out, according to the website. There are a total of 20 players on the SC Lower Atlantic State team.

Wando volleyball coach Alexis Glover was enshrined into the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association (SCACA) Hall of Fame.

Glover is one of six inductees into the Class of 2013. She has compiled a 745-261 career record and has coached at Wando since 1985 leading the Warriors to five state finals and one title.

The other 2013 class members are, according to the SCACA website: G.F. (Gus) Allen, B.E. (JR) Boyd, Jr., R. Scott Douglass, Lewis Lineberger and William Metcalf.

Academic Magnet

The Academic Magnet boys soccer team remains unblemished in region play this season after moving to 6-0 with a victory at Battery Creek this past Thursday. The Raptors are 9-1 overall and are ranked at the top of the state coaches association poll among 2A teams.

Academic Magnet hosts Stratford, Wednesday night.

The Raptor girls soccer team has the inside track to the region title but will need to fend off rival Bishop England on Thursday. The two teams met in Daniel Island a month ago and Academic Magnet (16-1, 7-0 region) left with a 3-2 victory.

Since that contest, the Raptors are outscoring their opponents 85-1 in a dominating stretch of 11 games.

Bishop England

The Bishop England boys soccer team is in the midst of an enduring final set of games. The Bishops lost at Pinewood Prep this past Saturday and faced Wando Tuesday night after the Moultrie News went to press.

After that, they’ll play Academic Magnet, Christ Church, Porter Gaud and Fort Dorchester to close the regular season. The combined record of those teams is 35-12-1. Pinewood Prep moved to 10-3 with the win and Wando was 14-0 and ranked the best program in the country prior to their contest. Bishop England is 11-4 overall and 4-0 in region action.

The Bishop England girls soccer team was shut out against rival Wando this past Saturday, 4-0. The Bishops travel to Academic Magnet, Thursday night, for a key region game. They are 9-4 overall and 4-1 in region play so far this season.

The Wando boys soccer team earned the top 4A ranking in the nation among spring teams this past week. And, for good reason.

The Warriors are one of the rare undefeated teams left at 14-0 overall and 5-0 in Region 7. They hosted rival Bishop England, Tuesday night, after press time.

The Wando girls soccer team defeated Bishop England this past Saturday to move its record to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in region action.

Monday night, they traveled to Goose Creek and Tuesday night, they traveled to Stratford. Both contests’ results were not available at press time.

Bishop England

The Bishop England baseball team saw its undefeated mark in region play go away with a 5-4 loss this past week at Woodland.
